Quit Week 2008
This campaign was run during May 2008.
If Smoking was a Friend
If Smoking was a Friend Campaign challenges smokers to reflect on their relationship with their cigarettes. According to research, many smokers admit to regularly planning their day or who they spend time with around their cigarettes.
A sequence of identifiable situations exposes the extent to which a smoker's life is controlled by this addiction. A man holding a cigarette reflects on this relationship, realising that it will more than likely result in an inevitable health consequence.
'If smoking was a friend, you'd want him out of your life'.
Quit smoking support is available through the Quitline - 13 QUIT (13 7848).
Bronchoscopy
The Bronchoscopy Campaign aims to encourage smokers to quit by focusing on a well-established health consequence of smoking - lung cancer. It delivers new information to smokers by showing what lung cancer sounds and looks like.
The whistling or wheezing noise is the sound of a lung tumour almost completely blocking an airway. Lung tumours that are found at this late stage are often too late to operate.
Quit smoking support is available through the Quitline - 13 QUIT (13 7848).
Want to quit?
An important part of this campaign is to make sure that smokers are aware that they are able to access information and support when quitting. This is available through the Quitline telephone support service. Quitline is a confidential and non-judgmental service run by specially-trained people.
Quitline advisors know how hard it can be for smokers to quit for good, and that it can take several attempts. They can provide information on any aspect of giving up smoking. The Quitline can send free self-help materials and offers a free telephone call-back support service to help smokers through the quitting process.
