QuitSkills
QuitSkills workshops are designed to equip health and community workers with the information and expertise to assist and support clients who want to stop smoking.
Clients may be prompted to try quitting by the introduction of a smoke-free policy within the workplace, because of the influence of a mass media campaign, because of ill health in either themselves or someone close to them, or simply because they feel the time is right for them to quit smoking.
QuitSkills workshops are suitable for all health and community workers and can be tailored specifically to your needs.
Both half and full day sessions are available.
All sessions will cover:
- Tobacco information and statistics
- Passive smoking
- Why people smoke
- The quitting process
- Cessation techniques, including NRT
- Withdrawal
- Staying stopped
- Practical solutions
- The Quitline support
- Running quit groups
In addition, full day sessions address group-specific information needs and skills.
Prompting and support from health workers can encourage smokers to try quitting. Most smokers report wanting to give up, but often think it is too hard. With help and advice from someone they trust, many will try quitting, and some will succeed.
Health workers are respected sources of information and advice about a wide variety of health matters for much of the population. When health professionals talk about many lifestyle issues, such as smoking, people listen.
Just asking about smoking each time you see clients can help keep quitting on their personal agenda. After attending a QuitSkills workshop, you will be better able to advise and encourage smokers to give quitting a try with confidence.
These skills can be used in a wide range of situations, from informal face-to-face visits, to community health forums.
