Parents Campaign – “You should have been there”
The family orientated theme of the Parents campaign means that the family can act as an important source of reinforcement and support for the smoker attempting to quit.
Parents were selected as the primary target group for several reasons, including: that parental responsibility could be a powerful motivator to quit smoking; parents generally fall into the 20–40 year age group, where quitting is likely to result in the biggest health benefits; parents quitting is likely to result in less exposure to dangerous passive smoke in the home for children; and research has shown that children’s smoking is strongly affected by the behaviour of their parents, and that parents’ quitting can provide flow-on benefits in terms of reducing youth uptake.
The Parents campaign will air statewide in Tasmania from January 9 to 29, 2011 and again from March 6 to 26.
Want to quit?
An important part of any quit attempt is access to information and support. This is available through the Quitline telephone support service or by talking to your GP or Pharmacist.
The Quitline is a confidential and non-judgmental service run by specially-trained people. Quitline advisors know how hard it can be for smokers to quit for good, and that it can take several attempts. They can provide information on any aspect of giving up smoking. The Quitline can send free self-help materials and offers a free telephone call-back support service to help smokers through the quitting process.
